Taylorfield

After action report

23-24 September 2006

New this year was the Taylorfield display and public battle. The Marlboro Volunteers acquired an old airfieldto have their Ride Through History events at a permanent location. The site has a lot of potential and a lot of acreage in which to have both displays and battles. As usual the Volunteers were great host and treated uswell. This was a first time event and the weather was gloomy most of the weekend so the crowds were small, but we made the most of it and enjoyed some good camaraderie. The highlight of the weekend was when Friedrich unveiled an original German WWII parachute, and of course it was quite windy so it tookat least two guys to keep it on the ground. What a sight, the last time it was probably out of it's pouch was sixty years ago. Suddenly disaster reared its ugly head! As Georg, Pieter and Friedrich were enjoyingbeing dragged across an open field by the parachute a gust of wind came by and Georg and Pieter lost theirhold on the chute while Friedrich held on for dear life.He was going for a ride, a ride right through our camp! You should have seen the look of terror on Friedrich's face as he plowed through Georg's command tent andsmashed into an MG display. Thank goodness other re-enactors were able to catch and collapse the parachuteor he may have ended up plowing through the Civil War displays. Believe it or not he did walk away unscathedand nothing was damaged. Our unit had a good turn out for this event and we were able to help the Volunteers with their Ride Through History battles. In which we received a thank you for helping them out. At some point in time they say wewill have a permanent spot for setting up our display and encampment along one of the runways, which aregrown up and now a wooded area. Ahhh shade!
